Is there a priority applications deadline?

Is securing an advisor before applying to the program compulsory?

No

What kind of financial support do you provide?

We offer full support (stipend, full tuition and health/dental) for all PhD students in our program. 

Is the GRE required?

No

How are applicants chosen to be interviewed?

Our program takes a holistic approach to applications, evaluating each one to assess a student's potential for success.

If there is an on-campus admission interview, how can I take part as an international applicant?

There are two on-campus interview sessions for U.S. applicants. 

We offer virtual interviews for international applicants and you will be contacted if your application is chosen for an interview. 

Is there an application fee?

Yes, there is an application fee for both U.S. ($60) and international students ($100). 

If you are selected for an interview and complete the on-campus or virtual interview process, your application fee will be reimbursed.
 

U. S. applicants may be eligible for a Graduate Application Fee Waiver through the Graduate Admissions Office based upon program participation or financial hardship. Please note that waivers may have early deadlines. 

Is there an application waiver for international students?

Unfortunately, we do not provide an application fee waiver for international students. Our program will reimburse your application fee if your application is selected for an interview and you complete the virtual interview process.

Can I apply to the PhD program without a Master's degree?

Yes, a Master's degree is not a prerequisite for applying to our program.

Do I need a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology to apply?

No, a specific Bachelor's degree in Microbiology is not required for application. However, applicants with a strong scientific background and research experience are preferred.

What are the English proficiency requirements for an international student applicant?

International applicants who do not meet the requirements for a waiver are required to submit English proficiency scores, please visit the above website for details.

What are the requirements for TOEFL IBT/ TOEFL iBT or IELTS score?

If you're an international applicant, we look for strong TOEFL scores of 100 or greater, or an IELTS overall score of 8.0 or higher.

Is there an opportunity to rotate through different labs or do I need to decide on a lab before starting?

Students will rotate through three labs during their 1st year.

What is the minimum grade-point average (GPA) for the Microbiology Graduate Program?

A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00/4.00, or the foreign equivalent as determined by the Graduate College Office of Admissions.

Does the program have rolling admission, or do you only accept students in the fall?

Most students enter in the fall, but rare exceptions may be considered for other times based on specific circumstances.
