The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is pleased to announce that Dr. Filiz Korkmaz has been granted the Innovation Award from the American Lung Association. This 2-year funded project will focus on understanding how inflammation is regulated and how lung repair occurs following lung infection. Specifically, this project is focused on two specialized immune cells that reside near the lung that may prevent lung injury. How they are established and the mechanisms they use to prevent lung injury are not known but may provide new avenues for the development of therapeutics that not only prevent infection but also improve repair.
